New Register
Electoral Registration Officers published the new voters’ roll (Electoral Register) on 1 December 2008. This will be used for all elections held during 2009, the main one of which is the election for members of the European Parliament which will take place on Thursday 4 June 2009. If your name is not included you will be unable to vote. Further information is available by clicking on “Electoral Registration” in the menu on the left. Arrangements are well in hand for this year’s annual electoral canvass. Some Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will begin postal enquiries in August to be followed by door-to-door visits from canvass staff during September. Other EROs will start simultaneous postal and door-to-door work in September. However you are contacted be sure to respond to the ERO’s enquiry to ensure your vote at future elections. The 14 Scottish Assessors have also been appointed as Electoral Registration Officers, covering 31 out of the 32 Scottish local authorities (The City of Dundee being the exception). Since 8 February this year legislation has required the ERO to collect “Personal Identifiers” from all existing and new applicants for postal and proxy voting. If you are already registered as an “absent voter” or wish to apply you will have to provide a specimen signature and your date of birth. Letters and application forms will be issued to all of Scotland’s absent voters during February and March. The SAA Portal was originally launched on 16 August 2004 with funding from the 14 Scottish Assessors and the Modernising Government Fund. Since that time a range of on-line transactional services has been added as well as other improvements to the site. Today sees the re-launch of the Portal with an improved site design and new menu structure which it is intended will enhance the experience of all site users.
